SOME MORE ABOUT ME

Both of my parents are artists and have had a big influence on my work. I am also very influenced by the Dutch and Flemish painting traditions, dark rich backgrounds with subject matter that is muted but still has strategic pops of color. Two of my favorite American painters are John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth. Sargent’s perfect balance of looseness yet tonal realism has been something I’ve appreciated since I was a boy. I find myself in a constant struggle to achieve the perfect balance between clean simple subjects, and keeping enough interest for the viewers eye.

My studio process usually consists of working through multiple paintings at once, laying out compositions and blocking in color then moving onto each painting with layers and detail. Most of my work is oil on stretched canvas, and occasionally on oil on panel.

I continually look to experiment with composition, subject matter, and color palettes from painting to painting. It’s not uncommon for me to have a finished piece that I go back to and rework.

I live in Northeast Ohio with my wife Margaret and our children Jack, Lucy and Tommy. I travel across the country to show my paintings throughout the year. For more information about where I will be showing my work you can find my show schedule here.
